If your BMO card is not activated, purchases and ATM withdrawals will be declined even if your account is in good standing. The fastest way to confirm activation is to try a small purchase or check your BMO Online Banking, and if it is not active, you can activate it immediately online, by phone, or through the BMO mobile app.

How to Check If Your BMO Card Is Activated

1

Try a small purchase

Attempt a small transaction at a store or online. A BMO card that is not activated will be declined with a message like “card not activated” or “authorization denied.”
2

Check BMO Online Banking

Sign in to BMO Online Banking and review your card details. If the card is active, it will show a normal status. A recently replaced or new card may appear with an activation notice.
3

Check the BMO mobile app

Open the BMO app, go to your account dashboard, and look for any alerts that say your card needs to be activated.

Common Signs That Your BMO Card Is Not Activated

  • Your transaction is declined at a store or online merchant
  • An ATM says your card is not valid or not authorized
  • You receive an SMS or email reminder from BMO to activate your card
  • The card does not appear fully active in the BMO mobile app
Do not use your BMO card at a merchant before activation. Businesses may place a temporary authorization hold that can block funds, even if the transaction itself is declined. Always activate your card as soon as you receive it.

What Can Delay Activation

Several situations can cause a delay between receiving your card and having it fully active:
  • You activated it but the system has not yet updated. In rare cases, activation can take a few minutes to an hour to fully propagate across BMO’s payment network.
  • You have not received a new PIN. Some BMO cards require a PIN to be set up before the card is considered fully active.
  • The card was lost in transit and you received a replacement. If the original card was reissued, the new card may have a different activation timeline.
  • You activated it by phone but have not fully completed prompts. Automated phone activation requires you to finish all steps, including confirming the last four digits or ZIP/postal code.
