Have your information ready

Before you call, keep your BMO card, Social Insurance Number or date of birth, and your BMO Online Banking username (if you have one) nearby. The agent may need these to verify your identity.
2

Call the correct number

Dial the phone number that matches your card type above. If you are unsure whether your card is classified as credit or debit, check the logo on the front: a credit card usually displays a Visa or Mastercard logo, while a debit card displays an Interac logo.

Follow the prompts or speak to an agent

The automated system can guide you through activation without waiting for an agent. If the automated system cannot resolve your issue, stay on the line to connect with a live representative.
BMO’s automated card activation phone line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Live agent hours may vary by department.

BMO Mobile App Chat

If you prefer not to call, you can reach BMO support through the chat feature in the BMO mobile app. When to use it: For non-urgent questions about activation steps, account holds, or if you are having trouble with bmo.com/activate. How to access it: Sign in to the BMO app, tap the menu or support icon, and select Chat with us or Message us. What you will need: Your card number and a brief description of the activation issue you are experiencing.

Visit a BMO Branch

For complex activation issues, or if you received a card in the mail but do not have online banking set up, visiting a branch is often the fastest way to resolve the problem. When to visit: If your account requires in-person identity verification, if your card is damaged, or if you need a replacement card issued on the spot. What to bring: Two pieces of government-issued ID and your BMO card or account number.
Branch hours vary by location. Use the BMO branch locator on bmo.com to confirm hours and book an appointment before visiting.
